Old school since 1987. After taking a look at the menu which is displayed on the wall outside I decided not to eat here simply because it was very expensive. A burger and fries will cost you around $24 USD and that was one of the lowest prices on the menu. I really liked the old building the restaurant was in so we stopped and had a mocha coffee instead, it was very cold outside. We sat next to the bar area and the waiter had trouble with the espresso machine, the thing looked like one of those automated machine that serves bad coffee, the drink ended up being less than spectacular.

Ate here with some friends several weeks ago on our sojourn through the Nordic countries. We chose Dickens largely because of the two dining establishments most proximate to our hotel, it wasn't TGI Fridays. Given the paucity of thought that went into our selection, it turned out that we made quite a good choice.
We secured a corner table in the covered dining section jutting out onto the boulevard. From this vantage point we could observe the passersby, families out for a stroll, couples ambling past with their arms entwined, students hurrying to catch a bus, dogs being walked with purpose, an ongoing parade of interesting and attractive people.
Anyway, on to the food. I chose the Dampet Skrei (NOK 279). The steamed cod with drawn butter was flaky, moist and delicious. An accompanying pea puree was rich and earthy, steamed carrots retained some snap and the boiled potatoes were a perfect foil for the butter as it migrated from the fish and across the plate. Very satisfying.
One friend had Kyllingsalat (NOK 195) that he found an interesting twist on traditional chicken salad. The other had the classic Dickens Burger (NOK 195) that he ate with evident relish.
For dessert I ordered Eplekake (NOK 105). The apple cake was dense, spiced with cinnamon and bursting with apples. Over it was poured a yoghurt cream reportedly from a local cheese farm. In my opinion, it worked better than Crème Fraiche or Ice Cream, at least in this setting.
Wait staff was very pleasant. All in all, a wonderful find.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Brittany P.South San Francisco, USA17224594. sep. 2015
Was looking for somewhere to eat that served traditional Norwegian food. Happened to see this place while walking around the square with my mom, so we decided to to give it a try.
The interior of the restaurant was very comfortable and decorated nicely.
The staff was very friendly and quick with their service. They were also very helpful when we ordered their cheese plate and they told us about the best way to eat each cheese.
The food itself was pretty good. My mom and I both ordered their curry mango salad. My mom didn't care for the dressing, but I loved it. The salad was pretty big in size as well.
Overall, I enjoyed their food but was not blown away.. especially considering how expensive the food was. I did like the seating though. It was fun talking and people watching though their huge windows.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Johnny S.New York, USA177514613. juni 2016
Very cute place near the city center right by the lake. The weather was nice enough to permit outdoor seating. Waitstaff, who were very accommodating, offered blankets when it was brisk. The food was clean and well-portioned. I split an order of mussels with my friend and ordered for myself the white fish of the day (hake) which came in a saffron sauce, vegetables and pommes Anna. Everything was cooked well and I left with a full stomach.
This spot is worth visiting for a nice weekend lunch or dinner.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Saul G.White Plains, USA429462081. aug. 2017
Kind of an obvious choice if you're staying at the Oleana, we wandered in here when we couldn't get into Pingvinen. This might serve as your wakeup to Bergen prices, it ain't cheap Magee.
As suits a place named Dickens, English beer is in order. My friend had an Old Speckled Hen, I had a weissbier. Our ladies had wine by the glass. Everyone was happy.
We all started with the Bergensk fisksuppe (fish soup). Milady and I went with a small bowl, with an order of moules et frites to follow. Our friends plumped for a large bowl, and had the frites as a side.
The soup was creamy, without being too rich and had a nice amount of fish. The mussels were the star of the show, plump, well cleaned, nearly all open. I thought these were much better than the Prince Edward Island mussels that dominate our New York menus. The wine/cream sauce was savory. The fries were very good.
With such rich dishes, dessert was not on order.
A nice introduction to Bergen. Service was quite good on a Sunday night.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stefan P.London, Storbritannia6918329413. feb. 2016
We found this place through the searing rain and winds on a Saturday night in Bergen. It's not hard to miss as it has a massive neon sign that can be seen from the top of the funicular. We were a little skeptical on entry but our state of wettness dictated we seek shelter. None of our party of four was dissapointed with our choice.
Dickens consists of several rooms, all of which were busy with diners. Our waitress was from Poland and couldn't have been more friendly. We ordered a round of Norwegian beers and then settled into the menu. Given our location most of us were anxious for fish. We all had the fish soup to start-it was excellent-unctious, creamy and so, so tasty. I would have licked the bowl if I could. For mains I had a fish dish, though can't recall exactly what now. Most had fish but one had the lamb dish.. I can honestly say the food was great and we all pronounced the meal the best we had had in Norway. The service was attentive and friendly. We almost came back the next day. Recommended most highly.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Solveig B.Bergen61115. des. 2015
Nice outdoor location, wonderful in the summertime. The service leaves a lot to be desired. Not very friendly and even less attentive to the customer. Fine for a cup of coffee or tea in the summer, but not really worth it for a full meal.

Ive been here a couple of times for dinner and i usually get the burger. Its not the best, but certainly good enough to make me come back. The service is usually great!

We had two meals here we liked it so much. Actually it's quite noticeable located along the pedestrianized mall. There is an upstairs and downstairs dining room, both very busy. Upstairs is better IMO. Service is typical Scandic very efficient. Food was all right too.
